HIV Self Testing

In November 2020, the Government of Canada licensed the INSTI HIV Self Test as an HIV screening tool to further support access to HIV testing in Canada.  The INSTI HIV Self Test is an anti-body test which uses the same technology as the rapid point-of-care test, INSTI HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody Test, which are accessible through local healthcare providers in Canada.  With this self-test, individual collect their own sample, through a finger prick, conduct the test, and interpret the results themselves. The INSTI HIV Self Test is 99% accurate and designed to be a screening test, meaning that a reactive (positive) result would need to be confirmed by a laboratory HIV test.

HIV Self tests can be purchased online from the manufacturer for $34.95 plus shipping. They may also be available in some pharmacies for purchase.  Currently research projects are also being done across Canada which are providing the HIV Self Test kits for free.  These projects include I’m Ready to Know through REACH Canada and Test Now through the CBRC.
